GABA, bumetanide, ketogenic diet, channelopathies, histamine … and all other things autism

If you are a reader of this blog and interested in all things autism, especially those things regularly discussed here, you may want to find yourself in London on the weekend of 18-19 June, attending a conference organised by a UK charity Treating Autism. The location is Brunel University campus - a stone’s throw from Heathrow airport, or a fun tube ride from Eurostar St Pancras station.

If you can only attend one day make sure it is Sunday 19th, as this day will feature presentations on most promising treatment approaches in autism including the one on bumetanide for autism titled ‘Reducing symptoms of autism by addressing dysfunctional GABA: A chloride concentration story’ by none other than Dr Lemonnier himself.

Prof Dr Athanasios Evangeliou of Papageorgiou Hospital Thessaloniki will be giving not one but two presentations: ‘Autism, epilepsy and metabolic disorders’ (am) and ‘“Alternative” treatments for Autism in mainstream clinical settings’ (pm). He will be discussing many different things, amongst them the merits of screening evaluations and identification of metabolic biomarkers in autism with therapeutic relevance, such as for example biotin, B complex vitamins, branched chain amino acids and ketogenic diet. John Rodakis of NofOne Research Foundation will be flying over from the States to update us on the latest sulforaphane and suramin autism trials, Dr Coutinho from Oxford Uni will reveal their latest findings on maternal autoantibodies in autism, and there will be a very special presentation by a very special reader and a regular contributor to comment section of this blog – as I am not saying more J you will have to find out by clicking on this link http://treatingautism.org.uk/event/the-treating-autism-international-conference-2016/

Today’s post was driven by another attempt not to take a statin. Statins are among the world’s most prescribed, and yet most maligned, drugs.  Hundreds of millions of people take a statin drug every day to lower their cholesterol, but a small, vocal minority complain about muscle pains, memory loss and even type 2 diabetes. Since my Polypill is evidently a therapy, and not a cure, for autism, the odds are that it will be needed life-long.  Regardless of the apparent lack of side-effects, nobody should be taking drugs/supplements that are not really needed.  Atorvastatin (Lipitor/Sortis) is part of my Polypill for the type of autism affecting Monty, aged 11, with ASD. Bumetanide Dosage & Effectiveness in Autism & Asperger's

The clinical trial of Bumetanide in autism, published in 2012, was what triggered my interest in using drugs to treat autism. A randomised controlled trial of bumetanide in the treatment of autism in children In that trial on children aged 3-11 years, the dosage used was 1mg a day, split in two doses. In my trial, I found 1mg in the morning effective, while splitting the dose rendered it ineffective.   I was surprised to hear that the French researchers find the treatment effective in 90% of cases of autism, including Asperger’s.   The reason is that while Monty, now aged 10 with ASD, is a responder, it seems that most people I know who have tried it have not responded.   O nly one did respond, and that was when the father upped the dosage. Now I hear that Lemmonier’s standard dosage has doubled to 2mg a day, with 1mg in the morning and 1mg at 5pm.  He tries for three months, before assuming the drug to be ineffective.
